: Printed on border: "The martyrdom here pictured happens to be that of Anne Ascue and others. She was burnt in autumn, and the ground must have been still black with the ashes of that Christian heroine, over which the dogs danced, and the devil in the miracle play jested not very many days later at Bartholomew Fair."
