: Picture caption: "Während des ganzen April lag Malta, die britische Zwingburg in Mittelmeer, in ständigem Bombenhagel der deutschen und italienischen Kampfmaschine. Ein deutscher Sturzkampfbomber vom Typ Ju 88 über dem Kriegshafen La Valetta." Note 2.) Malta was important because it gave the British a base which sat astride the Axis sea supply routes running from Italy to the Italian and German forces fighting in North Africa. Note 3.)
