: Picture caption: "Am 18. Juli konnten die Berliner die ersten Soldaten, die als Sieger von den Schlachtfeldern Polens und Frankreichs heimkehrten, jubelnd begrüßen. Fast in allen deutschen Garnisonstädten fanden in diesen Tagen solche ergreisenden Kundgebungen des Dankes statt." Note 2.) Title translates German picture caption Note 3.) The soldiers pass under Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the victory arch with its Quadriga (four-horse chariot) at the top. "Garrison towns" had large barracks nearby where soldiers were housed and trained.
