: Germany was forbidden from having an air force by the Versailles treaty, but Germany remained an "air minded" nation. Pilots who would later fly for the Luftwaffe were trained in civilan glider clubs or as airline pilots. Hitler officially announced the rebirth of the German Air Force in 1935. Note 2.) Picture caption: "Drüben warteten sie, daß Deutschlands kampfkraft zur Luft erlahmen würde. Im Reich aber wuchs in allen Altersklassen der Nachwuchs auf, denn Deutschland war nicht nur für diesen Kampf gerüstet, sondern längst ein Land der Flieger geworden. In einer Werkstatt des N.S.
