Der Kommandant erhielt das Ritterkreuz, die Mannschaft das Eiserne Kreuz." Note 2.) U-boat commander Lieutenant Fritz-Julius Lemp sank the British liner "Athenia" September 3, 1939. World opinion was outraged by the sinking of an unarmed passenger vessel, and the Germans put out a story that the British had sunk their own ship for propaganda purposes. Lemp was killed when his submarine was sunk in 1941. Note 3.) Title translates German picture caption
