: Picture caption: "Die große Umsiedlungsaktion der Volksdeutschen aus dem Osten begann mit der zweiten Etappe. Nach den Baltendeutschen kehrten weit über 100 000 Wolhyniendeutsche ins Reich zurück. Die Männer zogen im Treck zu den neuen Siedlungsstätten, Frauen und Kinder fanden fürsorgliche Aufnahme in den großen Durchgangslagern." Note 2.) Volhynia was a region in northwest Ukraine that bordered on Poland and had a small population of ethnic German residents. The gathering of all those considered "racially German" into the Reich was a major facet of National Socialist ideology, and "homecomings" like this received much propaganda attention. Note 3.)
