: Autograph manuscript of a letter by Voltaire to his niece, Marie-Louise Mignot, afterwards Denis. Dated at head of text: "A Cirey par Vassy en Champagne, 7 Xbre 1737." Signed (p. [4]): V. The letter begins: "Je reçois, ma chere enfant, votre lettre du 1er decembre. Je vais vous parler comme à ma nièce, à ma fille et à mon amie." Note 2.) In ink; on half-sheet 20 x 32 cm., folded to 4 p., with creases showing further folds for mailing. Note 3.) Martin J. Gross Collection. Note 4.) Voltaire, then living at Cirey in the Champagne region with the marquise du Châtelet, proposes that his late sister's elder daughter, the recently orphaned Marie-Louise Mignot, should marry Louis François Toussaint du Ravet de Champbonin, the son of a neighbor; he offers a dowry and help with her establishment.
