Previews began in New Haven on February 27, 1951, followed by previews in Boston. Opened on Broadway March 29, 1951at the Saint JamesTheatre, closing March 20, 1954. Yul Brynner originated the role of the King. Gertrude Lawrence, the original Anna, played the role from its opening through August 1952, prior to her hospitalization and subsequent death from liver cancer. Celeste Holm appeared in the production for six weeks during one of Lawr ....
