: Presenting an unbreakable hedge of spears, a tightly-packed Greek infantry formation called a phalanx impacts a Persian army, throwing it into confusion. The faces and helmets of the Greeks can be seen above their long pikes (called "sarissae"). Archers advance up the hill in the rear, using their bows to skirmish with the enemy and cover the vulnerable flanks of the body of spearmen. Note these from left to right: Both horse and camel cavalry are fighting, the armored horsemen with axes and javelins, the camel riders with bows. Light infantry skirmishers (in the foreground in soft red hats and blue-gray tunics), with javelins, shields and bow-cases/quivers are fleeing.
