: Jupiter, king of the gods, sits at center, his eagle holding a thunderbolt overhead. His daughter, Venus, is at right. Mercury, messenger of the gods, is at left wearing his winged helmet and sandals and holding the caduceus (a staff entwined with two snakes). Note 2.) Jupiter, moved by the pleadings of his daughter Venus on behalf of the wandering Aeneas and his Trojans, will send Mercury to the city of Carthage (shown below with its walls, harbor and ships) to ensure that Aeneas is welcomed by queen Dido. Note 3.) Plate from an unknown edition of Dryden's translation of the Aeneid.
