Based on Lynn Riggs' play Green Grow the Lilacs, this musical opened March 31, 1943 at the St. James Theater and ran for 2,212 performances. It was Richard Rodgers' first collaboration with librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. Alfred Drake played Curly, with Joan Roberts as Laurey, Celeste Holm as Ado Annie and Lee Dixon as Will Parker.
